Banner Bull – Historical Adventure novel set in the Renaissance.
Banner Bull – A vintage novel by the author of “Scaramouche; Captain Blood; The Sea Hawk; etc.”
Three breath-taking adventures in the incredible life of Cesare Borgia. A great addition for your collection of antique novels!
Sabatini recreates the political intrigue and misguided loyalties. They reigned the ‘Banner of the Bull’ waved victoriously over the land. Weaving descriptions and spirited characterisations into historical events. The story of the notorious Cesare Borgia.
Cesare Borgia portrayed well in a book. Most fictional authors, who apparently have done their research, write off Cesare as a psychopath which he was not. Unless you accept Capello (who gets Sabatini’s clear scorn in this portrayal of him) and other anti-Borgia opponents every word as fact (which you should not) you can label him as a psychopath. However, reading further than that Cesare’s character should make it plain to authors he was far from psycho and in fact he was a genius at times.
He was cruel, merciless, ambitious, and vengeful certainly. But given the circumstances of the treasonous times in which he lived it’s not hard to see why. Sabatini captures the cunning and charming Valentino to perfection and shows us why his cruelty became legendary while justifying his cruelty through the would-be betrayers and murderers own actions. Again and again must Cesare thwart assassinate attempts, but he manages to out scheme all around him true to life. Cesare – the malevolent icon of the Renaissance and it was great seeing him rendered considerably more human here than usual.
