The Crown Derby Plate – 1933 story
The Crown Derby Plate confirmed Marjorie Bowen – one of our best ghost story writers.
An antique collector hears of an ancient woman with a large collection of china. Hoping to complete a particular set, the collector pays a visit to the woman’s ramshackle house, where she makes a terrifying discovery.
The Crown Derby Plate – the first of the series to focus on women, which was nice after several stories centered on men. Miss Pym heads off to a neighbour’s in hopes of finding the last china plate in her set. The plate – lost years before, but her visit feels a bit queer. The neighbour odd, the house freezing, and the missing plate was hidden for inexplicable reasons. Only after leaving and finding out that the owner has been abroad because she could not tolerate the haunting of the estate does Miss Pym realise that she had an encounter with a ghost! It’s a bit sillier than the other ghost stories in the series, but still filled with creepy descriptions and eerie feelings.
“Christmas” Ghost story – basically a ghost story to tell at the time. This story takes place when three friends meet at Xmas. And one interested to know if a nearby place has the missing plate from an estate sale she went to… and gets her wish to meet a ghost!
