Marazan – A story of flying, drug smuggling and murder in the 1920s.
Marazan involves aviation, drug smuggling, Italy… also Marazan Sound, in the Isles of Scilly.
Pilot Philip Stenning crashes his aircraft while flying from London to Devon. The escaped prisoner Denis Compton saves him. He’s deceived by his half-brother, Italian baron Rodrigo Mattani. Owing Compton his life, Stenning agrees to investigate Mattani’s illegal activities.
Another wonderful and believable story from Nevil Shute. It could have written about an event happening today.
The story tells how Stenning plays a key role in breaking that drug ring. It involves episodes characteristic of Shute: flying, small boat sailing, and a love story.
Stenning was a major character in Shute’s first (unpublished) novel Stephen Morris. Stenning also crops up as a comparatively minor character in Shute’s next two novels So Disdained (1928) and Lonely Road (1932).
