Dr. Whitty is a person of some importance in the town of Ballintra, which is situated in western Connacht. He lives on the best of terms with Colonel Beresford, the local landlord, Mr. Jackson, the rector, and Father Henaghan, the parish priest. In his efforts to benefit the town, to help those in any kind of difficulty and to purify the public life of the place, he meets with a series of adventures of an unusual and amusing kind. He finally wins the affections of Miss Mulhall, a lady who was engaged in furthering the philanthropic schemes of an English social reformer. The series of his adventures closes with the welcome home given to him and his bride by the grateful townspeople.
